New Year, New Pattern - The Cici Tote Bag Digital Pattern is here!

Lisa Stewart

Patricia Maxey has done it again – This time she has designed a stylish, structured tote bag pattern perfect for a Confident Beginner sewist. Finishing at 16" x 11" x 5", it will hold heaps of stuff – and you’ll get heaps of compliments on your stylish tote.

Did you ever think that lugging all your stuff (or your kids’ stuff) around could be so stylish and practical? With a contrasting bottom and purse feet, this structured bag will hold whatever you need to take with you. There is ample interior room, two slip pockets, and a zipper pocket. The top closes with a long zipper. Shoulder straps keep it close and convenient, but there’s also an adjustable crossbody strap to distribute the weight and keep the bag closer when out in a crowd. All straps are reinforced with riveting, strengthening the straps, and this bag will be a go-to for your busiest days. New skills for beginners include working with various interfacings, inserting zippers, adding rivets, and sewing through multiple layers.

Zeiba Monod of Sew Special by ZM  chose to leave off the crossbody adjustable strap and added extra rivets. She says the following about her classy bag:

"I used Neko and Tori by Itsuko Naka for Cotton and Steel (medium weight cotton) and black cork for the exterior. Moda confetti Ombré for the lining as well as Robert Kaufman dyed linen metallic Sand for the zipper pocket and slip pocket binding. My hardware was from Spencer Ogg.   I just got this fab rivet template by By Piera and it makes placing rivets a doddle. Although in this case the Decovil was a challenge I wouldn’t have passed on the opportunity to bling this baby up. She’s my new bag!"

Rebecca Hansen of Two Leos Design website, used Rifle Paper Co. cotton canvas (the Menagerie Monstera fabric) genuine leather for the overlay and straps, cotton webbing for the crossbody strap and waterproof canvas for the lining. Find her other beautiful creations on her Facebook, and Instagram.

Becca Olson at Turtle Trax Too  said,

"My main fabric was a Suppler blend from Sew Fit Fabrics..It an athletic fabric but I wanted the bag to match a skirt I am making. I also used a vegan leather for the accent and the inside is a brocade that I love."

Becca Forrette of Cosmic Thread Customs used a retro design canvas and marine vinyl from Joann's for the exterior, and home decor fabric from Ikea for the lining. Check out her Etsy shop, on Facebook, and follow her on Instagram.

A big thank you to the pattern testers. We gave them a short amount of time (due to technical delays on our part) and they provided us with gorgeous interpretations of The Cici Tote Bag. This pattern is easily customized so that you can make it in “your own unique style.”
